There are a multitude of things that can go wrong at your rental property while you’re away on vacation. A little preparation can go a long way in keeping your home and belongings safe as well as help avoid potentially disastrous maintenance issues. Even though you’re renting your property, you’re still responsible for the well-being of the home as well as any general upkeep of the outdoor spaces while you’re away. Here are some things you can do to ensure that your rental remains safe both indoors and out while you’re on vacation.
- If you will be leaving your property vacant for more than 8 days at a time, please notify us by text, call or email.
- Have your mail forwarded to a family member, friend, or neighbor. Or at least have one of these people stop by each day to pick up your mail and newspapers.
- Connect an indoor lamp to a timer and schedule it to go on at night. Doing this makes it appear that someone is in your home, making it less tempting to potential burglars.
- If you’ll be away during colder months, keep the temperature of your property at 60 degrees or higher to eliminate any chance of frozen pipes.
- Be sure to lock all windows and doors locked to help keep your property insulated and secure.
- Be sure to mow your lawn before leaving for vacation. If you think it will need to be mowed while you’re away, make arrangements with a lawn care service or a friend/family member to mow it for you. Failure to do so can result in a fine from the city which you will be responsible for.
- If you’ll be away during the winter, make arrangements for someone to shovel and salt your sidewalks, walkways, driveway, and porch in case of snow. Failure to do so can result in a fine from the city which you will be responsible for.
- Don’t leave food or unwashed dishes out as these can attract various pests.
- Be sure that all appliances and electronics have been turned off before you leave. Unplugging them can even help you save on electricity.
